Dress codes and etiquette

Churches, including St Peter’s Basilica, require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf in summer. Sitting on some famous monuments, such as the Spanish Steps, is not allowed, and fines can apply, so follow local signs.

Book the big sights early

The Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Galleria Borghese use timed tickets that can sell out, especially in spring, summer and around holidays. Book on the official websites as soon as your dates are fixed, and be wary of unofficial resellers.
